Melrose Energy Fair Nov. 15, 2009
|

On behalf of the Melrose Energy Commission, we want to thank everyone
who attended and participated in our fifth annual Melrose Energy Fair,
which was held Nov. 15 at Memorial Hall. This was, by far, the most
successful fair to date, with more than 250 people attending, and we think
it was because there were so many contributions from right here in
Melrose.
We would like to commend the Middle School Environmental Club and
Brownie Troop 1245, who had terrific displays, and the High School
Environmental Club volunteers who helped staff the event. When
youngsters get involved with important issues like energy conservation,
recycling and climate change, it can’t help but spill over to their parents,
teachers and peers.
Melrose was also well represented by the Garden Club, Recycling
Committee, Conservation Commission, Public Library, Unitarian
Universalist Church and by several residents who hosted displays. The
Melrose Water Dept. and Dept. of Public Works donated conservation and
recycling kits for door prizes, and Starbucks and Shaw’s provided free
refreshments.
Of course, none of this would have been possible without the
sponsorship of National Grid. In addition, Covanta Energy and
TeamHamblin of ReMax Heritage Real Estate provided additional
financial support, enabling us to hire magician Peter O’Malley, whose
“Conservation Magic” show was a big hit with everyone.
There was a bit of everything at this year’s fair: free door prizes (courtesy
of area vendors), magic, hands-on demonstrations and lots of great
information. It was a truly educational event and lots of fun but most of all,
a community event. We look forward to another successful event next year.
